Heather And Terry Dubrow Put Health & Beauty Trends To The Test

Heather and Terry Dubrow are taking their curiosity about wellness, beauty, and longevity trends to the next level with their new video series, “Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig.” They’re trying all the things so you don’t have to, (unless it works, of course)!

Inspired by the success of their bestselling book and podcast of the same name, the series flips the script by turning the couple into their own test subjects. Instead of just researching and talking about the latest trends, the Dubrows personally try them out to get the truth about if they work or not. They explore everything from cutting-edge treatments to viral wellness hacks to longevity practices that promise to improve how you look and feel.

With their signature mix of humor, honesty, relatability, and expert insight, the series offers viewers a firsthand look at what’s worth trying and what’s not. Heather and Terry Dubrow had some time to sit down with The Blast to talk about the series, some of the things they’ve tried and how it’s gone, and more.

Heather And Terry Dubrow Try All The Trendy Things You Wonder About

APEX / MEGA

Have you wondered if NAD is all the internet says it is? Or maybe if salmon sperm facials actually do any good for your skin? What about GLP-1? Is it as great as many are saying it is? If you’ve thought to yourself, “I wonder if THAT works,” with “that” being anything trendy that is grabbing tons of attention and promises to be the next best thing in health, wellness, or beauty, then “Dr. & Mrs. Guinea Pig” is something you’ll want to dive into.

The married reality stars, Heather well known from “RHOC” and Terry from “Botched,” are basically donating their bodies to science so you don’t have to waste money or possibly put your health at risk because the internet is saying something trendy works.

When asked where the thought to do a try-it-before-you-buy-it type of series entered the chat, they explained that they’ve been doing this for years so why not share it with others?

“You have seen so much stuff like peptides and people recommend from gym bros to PhDs to chiropractors to all these people recommending all these treatments, some of which are very invasive and some which can have really a lot of side effects and have no scientific proof online,” Terry told The Blast exclusively. “We thought, you know, these are so popular, we should actually test them using the scientific method and test them on ourselves and that’s why we decided to do ‘Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig’ to give people an idea what works and what doesn’t work and what might actually be snake oil.”

Heather added, “We’ve actually written a bunch of books together, but our first book was called ‘Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig Presents the Best in Health, Wellness, and Beauty Anti-Aging Secrets.’ And so this is something we have organically done for ourselves and in the media on and off for years.”

The timing to bring this back into the spotlight seemed perfect with the surge of many trendy procedures and treatments circulating online.

The Dubrows Want To Shed Some Light On Top Trends That People Are Talking About

Heather and Terry go into each experiment knowing that sometimes their limits will be pushed, but they do it for the plot!

Some of their recent subjects have been creatine, eyedrop eyelifts, bad breath, and resistant carbs.

“One of the things that I’ve been obsessed with because I’m really into health, wellness, and longevity, and of course beauty, is creatine. And everybody’s saying creatine’s great for this, but then for the last year and a half you’ve been hearing these people say mega dosing creatine, for example, huge doses, which many have some significant side effects, is great for brain health,” Terry explained. “And all these people online are saying take five times the amount of creatine, and it’s really great for the brain. Well, based on what? Just because you say it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true.”

So that’s where Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig step in to shift the narrative to something that’s based on science and truth. The couple took mega doses of creatine and measured sleep, blood, weight, focus, and subjected their own brains to “actual neuropsychological studies that are available at major universities to determine focus, reaction time, and all those critical variables that you can actually clinically objectively measure to determine whether mega dosing is good or whether it has side effects.”

Some Experiments Can Be Scary But The Dubrows Do Them Anyway!

When asked if these experiments can be scary to them, they admitted that they “do get scared” because of all that goes into it, including blood draws, side effects, and the unknown in general. But regardless, the husband-and-wife duo are doing their part to help others.

“I feel like everyone’s always asking us what works and what doesn’t work. They consider, obviously, Terry’s an expert in his field and for me being the wife of a plastic surgeon, it’s like I have a little MD, married to doctor. So of course, I have learned by osmosis,” Heather shared. “But the other thing is, you know, look, we all want to feel good. We all want to look good. We all want to live a long, healthy, fit, strong life. How do we do that? So we’re as interested in finding out for ourselves as we are in finding out for you because as we get older, we’re figuring it out.”

When asked what the scariest experiment has been so far, they both quickly agreed, “vaginal and anal steaming,” with a giggle.

“That was a little funky, by the way,” Heather said. Terry jumped in to say the peptide experiment was the scariest because of the unknown.

“These treatments aren’t FDA approved and most of it is based on rat and mouse data,” Terry said. Heather added, “But everyone’s doing it, and we wanted to do it, so we’re talking about it.”

Terry Dubrow Shares His Unfiltered Thoughts On GLP-1s

When the topic of GLP-1s entered the chat, Terry happily shared his love for the drug.

“I am obsessed with GLP-1s. So obsessed that I actually studied for and took the American Board of Obesity Medicine certification exam, so I am currently not only a board-certified plastic surgeon, I was a board-certified general surgeon, I am now board certified in obesity medicine,” he proudly shared. “I think it’s one of the biggest advancements in all of the history of medicine and I love them.”

Terry explained that GLP-1s helps with sugar control, inflammation, brain health, heart health, and more. He shared that there’s a new drug that isn’t fully FDA approved yet but should be coming out at the end of this year or next year called Reta, or Retatrutide, and he’s quite excited about it.

“Eli Lilly’s about to come out with the FDA approved version at the end of the year or next year. The effects are so powerful because it has a fat burner in it,” he continued. “It’s just like Mounjaro, it’s got a GIP/GLP-1 and a fat burner to preserve muscle and burn fat and it’s literally 45% more effective than any of the other ones that came before it.”

Terry believes Reta will become the “first trillion-dollar drug when it comes on the market.” He also said there are “probably 15 more of these drugs in the pipeline about to come out in the next one to three years.”

“I think this is our version of AI [in medicine],” Terry added. “This is where things are going. AI is going to change everything as you know in the next one to three years, but this is all going to change our health and longevity in the most beautiful way.”

Red Flags To Look For When Choosing Health And Wellness Trends

If the Dubrows haven’t tried a trend on “Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig” yet and you’re wondering if it’s something that’s worth trying, there are a few red flags the couple wants you to keep in mind.

“If someone says to you, ‘I’m the only person in the world who does this procedure,’ or ‘there are only three of us that do this,’ you know it’s probably not a thing,” Terry said. “If it’s got some kind of fancy terminology in front of it that only they use to promote it, like if the word has ‘nano’ in front of is, it is probably BS.”

He further explained that one of the best things to ever happen to plastic surgeons and dermatologists is when someone coined the phrase, “Ozempic face.” He said it was started to “scare people and bring them into our office to fill them with filler” but it’s really just a “panic” phrase and “not a thing.”

“It just means maybe you are losing weight a little too quickly. Let your body catch up to it,” he said. “It’s like having a tummy tuck a week after you deliver a baby. Your skin is loose a week after, but it’s not going to be that loose six months or a year after. So just slow down, don’t spend a lot of money, spend a little bit of time.”

Heather shared that they are just really excited about “Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig” and feel it’s a “little love letter from us to our community.” They get tons of DMs asking for them to test certain things out and are enjoying the feedback they have been getting from viewers. Be sure to catch their series on YouTube and follow them on Instagram.
